Changing technology presents challenges and opportunities; some opportunities are small, but some are transformational. In my career I have helped or led companies to transform themselves to take best advantage of ever-changing technology. My work has addressed the technology itself — through technology selection, enterprise architecture, and system development — and the organizational structures and processes that ensure the advantages gained are sustainable over time.
In addition to my roles in individual companies, I’ve also provided industry leadership a s founder and chair of the Securities Industry Middleware Council, and as chair of the DCE program at the Open group.
A few highlights of my career in technologically-driven innovation include:
But creating technology isn’t enough. Organizational processes and structures must be put in place to ensure that quality is maintained, cost controlled, and the advantages gained are not lost when the next round of technologies emerge. Some specific accomplishments in this regard include:
While the majority of my experience has been in the financial services industry, my career has included work in defense electronics (command, control and communications; electronic warfare), medical instruments, embedded systems, and tele-communications. Common to most of my work has been a need for error-free operation; efficient use of constrained resources to achieve high performance; ultra-high reliability and near-continuous availability; and rigorous models of trust and robust security. As a result, I have, over the years, developed particular expertise in reliability and availability engineering.
